Market Snapshot

The dermal regeneration model refers to a two-layer skin regeneration system, in which the outer layer is made of a thin film of silicon which acts as the epidermis of the skin. It also helps protect the wound from infection and control moisture and heat loss. The outer thermal layer of collagen and glycosaminoglycan (GAG) functions as a biodegradable template that helps the body regenerate neoderm from skin tissue. On the contrary, the inner layer of dermal regeneration consists of complex matrices of crosslinked fibers. The porous material of the template helps regeneration of the skin. The cross-linked fibrous material of the dermal regeneration model acts as a scaffold for the regrowth of the skin layer. Once the dermal skin layer has been regenerated, the outer layer of the template is removed and replaced with a thin epidermal skin graft. This procedure leaves the wound looking supple, growing and allows for permanent regeneration of the skin. It allows faster healing of the wound with minimal scarring.

The use of a dermal regeneration template allows immediate wound closure without risk of loss of donor material. In 2005, Integra LifeSciences received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for its INTEGRA dermal regeneration model as a treatment for life-threatening burns and reconstructive surgery for repair of scarring when other therapies fail. Recently, in January 2016, Integra LifeSciences received US FDA approval for the treatment of chronic diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) with a dermal regeneration model. The application of this template is generally carried out in two operating sessions involving the product applied to the excision sites and the second procedure carried out 3 to 6 weeks after the placement of the product to remove the silicone layer and for an epidermal autograft applied to the neoderm.
